Every October 31, while the world is focused on costumes and candy, many Christian families quietly celebrate something far more meaningful—Reformation Day.
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. His act sparked the Protestant Reformation, reminding the world of the truth that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. These are the Five Solas that continue to shape our faith today.
For many homeschool families, Reformation Day has become a chance to pause and remember God’s faithfulness in history—and to pass that story on to our children.
Why Celebrate Reformation Day in Your Homeschool?
Homeschooling gives us such a beautiful opportunity to weave faith into our days. Reformation Day is one of those moments when history, faith, and family life all meet together. Instead of memorizing dry dates, your children get to see how God worked through ordinary people with courage and conviction.
It’s also a chance to celebrate truth in a joyful way—with hymns, Scripture, copywork, hands-on games, and even creative writing. These kinds of activities help kids remember more deeply than a simple textbook ever could.
Ways to Celebrate Reformation Day
Here are a few simple ideas for your family:
Read Psalm 46 together, the Scripture that inspired Martin Luther’s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.
Learn about the Diet of Worms and ask your children what it means to stand firm for truth.
Try a hands-on activity about the Gutenberg Press and learn how movable type changed the world.
Sing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God as a family hymn.
Play a fun game like Reformation Bingo or do a simple craft with your littlest
learners.
