There is just something about fall in Upstate New York.

The mountains turn shades of red and gold, farm stands fill up with apples and pumpkins, cider donuts are suddenly everywhere, and even an ordinary drive through the country can feel like a fall adventure.

And you really don't have to plan an elaborate vacation to enjoy it.

Some of our favorite fall days are the simple ones—packing a picnic, taking a drive to see the leaves, wandering through an apple orchard, finding a new waterfall, or letting the kids choose pumpkins straight from the field.

If you're looking for somewhere new to explore this autumn, I've gathered 35 beautiful places and fall experiences across Upstate New York that are perfect for a family day trip or weekend adventure.

1. Niagara Falls State Park — Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls belongs on a New York bucket list in any season, but seeing the falls surrounded by autumn color makes an already spectacular place even better.

Walk the paths through America's oldest state park, stop at the overlooks and let the kids simply take in the enormous scale and sound of the falls.

If you're coming from farther away, Niagara Falls can easily become the centerpiece of a fall weekend rather than just a day trip.

Perfect for: A big family adventure, waterfalls, photography and a fall weekend away.

2. Letchworth State Park — Castile

Letchworth State Park is one of those places that makes you wonder how something this beautiful is right here in New York.

Often called the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth follows the Genesee River through a dramatic gorge and includes three major waterfalls—Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.

In autumn, the gorge becomes surrounded by brilliant foliage, making this one of my top choices if you want that quintessential Upstate New York fall scenery.

Pack a picnic, choose a family-friendly trail and leave plenty of time for overlooks.

Perfect for: Fall foliage, waterfalls, hiking and picnics.

3. Watkins Glen State Park — Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen State Park feels almost magical.

The famous gorge contains 19 waterfalls, with stone paths, bridges and staircases winding alongside and even behind some of the falling water.

Older children who enjoy exploring will especially love this one, although there are quite a few stairs.

Because the Gorge Trail is seasonal, check its status before making a late-fall trip.

Perfect for: Adventurous families, waterfalls and a memorable nature day.

4. Taughannock Falls State Park — Trumansburg

Taughannock Falls State Park is a wonderful choice when you want impressive scenery without needing an all-day strenuous hike.

Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet into a gorge surrounded by towering cliffs. The relatively approachable Gorge Trail makes this a particularly nice waterfall adventure with children.

Combine it with an afternoon exploring Ithaca or another Finger Lakes stop.

Perfect for: Families with younger children, waterfall lovers and Finger Lakes day trips.

5. Kaaterskill Falls — Catskills

Kaaterskill Falls is one of the classic natural landmarks of the Catskills.

The two-tier waterfall becomes especially beautiful when the surrounding forest turns red, orange and yellow.

It is also extremely popular during peak foliage, so this is one where an early start can make your day much more enjoyable.

Stay on designated trails and viewing areas, and check current conditions before visiting.

Perfect for: Catskills foliage, waterfalls and nature photography.

6. Minnewaska State Park Preserve — Kerhonkson

If your ideal autumn day involves dramatic cliffs, a peaceful lake and seemingly endless views of colorful forest, put Minnewaska on your list.

The preserve sits along the Shawangunk Mountain ridge and offers hiking, carriage roads, waterfalls, lakes and incredible overlooks.

In 2026, some trails have closures or restrictions, so check the park's current information when planning your trip.

Perfect for: Hiking families, older kids and breathtaking foliage.

7. Green Lakes State Park — Fayetteville

Green Lakes State Park is one of my favorite kinds of fall destinations: beautiful enough to feel special but easy enough to turn into a relaxed family afternoon.

The park's two unusual glacial lakes are surrounded by upland forest, and there are trails around the area for exploring on foot.

Bring nature journals, collect observations along the way and watch how the brilliant lake colors contrast with the changing leaves.

Perfect for: Nature study, walking, picnics and Central New York families.

8. High Falls Gorge — Wilmington

Just a short drive from Lake Placid, High Falls Gorge offers a half-mile waterfall walk along the Ausable River with views of four cascading waterfalls.

Pair waterfalls with Adirondack fall foliage and you have a pretty incredible autumn outing.

Perfect for: Adirondack weekends, waterfalls and families who want a shorter scenic walk.

9. Lake Placid & Mirror Lake — Adirondacks

You don't necessarily need an attraction at all.

Sometimes the destination is simply Lake Placid in October.

Walk around Mirror Lake, explore Main Street, find somewhere cozy for lunch and take in the surrounding Adirondack mountains.

For a bigger adventure, add one of the nearby Olympic Legacy Sites or a scenic mountain experience.

Perfect for: A fall weekend, mountain scenery and combining nature with a cute downtown.

10. Lake George — Adirondacks

Lake George is known as a summer destination, but autumn gives it an entirely different personality.

The surrounding Adirondack mountains explode with color, summer crowds begin to thin and the walkable village makes it easy to combine outdoor exploring with shops and treats.

Take a scenic drive, walk near the lake and simply enjoy one of New York's prettiest regions during its prettiest season.

11. Walkway Over the Hudson — Poughkeepsie

Imagine looking down the Hudson River with colorful hills stretching out on both sides.

That's why fall is such a wonderful time to visit the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The elevated pedestrian bridge gives families a very different way to experience New York's autumn scenery, and its accessible route makes it a good option when a mountain hike isn't practical.

12. Allegany State Park — Salamanca

Western New York families shouldn't overlook Allegany State Park.

With forests, lakes, trails and plenty of room to explore, it's the kind of place where you can make the day as active—or as slow—as you want.

Apple Orchards Worth a Fall Road Trip

There are few things that feel more like fall than handing a child an apple bag and setting them loose among rows of apple trees.

And Upstate New York has no shortage of wonderful orchards.

13. Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards — LaFayette

Beak & Skiff Cider Mill is probably one of the best-known apple destinations in Central New York.

This is more than simply picking a bag of apples. The multi-generation farm combines pick-your-own apples with a market, bakery treats and family activities, making it easy to spend a substantial part of your day here.

Go hungry. Apple season practically requires cider and something warm from the bakery.

Perfect for: A full apple-picking day and Central New York families.

14. Behling Orchards — Mexico

Behling Orchards is another classic Central New York apple-picking destination.

The family-run orchard has become known for U-pick apples and seasonal fall fun.

Make the drive part of the experience—fall road trips through Oswego County can be beautiful on their own.

Perfect for: Apple picking and a traditional orchard day.

15. Appledale Orchards — Mexico

Appledale Orchards offers the kind of old-fashioned fall outing that doesn't need to be complicated: pick apples, wander around the farm and get something delicious before heading home.

Seasonal offerings have included a corn maze and weekend hayrides in addition to apple picking.

And yes—cider donuts are part of the appeal.

16. Bellinger's Orchard — Fultonville

Bellinger's Orchard LLC makes a great Capital Region-area fall destination.

Apple season is the main event, with pumpkins joining the harvest in September. Seasonal family activities have also included a corn maze and wagon rides.

It's exactly the kind of place where you can accomplish several fall bucket-list activities in one afternoon.

Perfect for: Apples + pumpkins + classic farm fun.

17. Critz Farms — Cazenovia

Critz Farms is another Central New York favorite and a particularly nice choice when you want more than simply picking apples.

It has appeared among New York's recommended family fall farms, and the Cazenovia area itself makes a beautiful autumn drive.

Perfect for: A country drive and a full fall-farm experience.

18. Abbott Farms — Baldwinsville

Abbott Farms is an easy fall outing for Syracuse-area families and appears on Central New York's seasonal U-pick orchard lists.

Make apple picking the main activity, then slow the day down. Let the kids choose their favorite apples, take pictures in the orchard and bring your harvest home for applesauce, pie or an easy apple crisp.

19. Ontario Orchards — Oswego

Ontario Orchards is another great Oswego-area stop to add to your fall rotation.

It is included among Central New York's seasonal apple destinations, making this an easy one to combine with a fall drive toward Lake Ontario.

20. Long Acre Farms — Macedon

Want a real corn maze?

Long Acre Farms is home to the Amazing Maize Maze, described by the farm as New York's longest-running corn maze.

21. Wickham Farms — Penfield

Wickham Farms near Rochester combines many of the things families are looking for in one fall outing.

Kelder's really leans into fall.

Its fall festival includes U-pick pumpkins, a corn maze, weekend hayrides and 35+ farm attractions.

That makes this a particularly good option if you have several ages to entertain and want to stay for a few hours.

23. The Great Pumpkin Farm — Clarence

The Great Pumpkin Farm is basically a celebration of all things October.

Past fall festivals have included a five-acre corn maze, amusement rides, apple cannons, jumping pillows and, naturally, a whole lot of pumpkins.

Because festival offerings and dates change each year, check the current schedule before planning your visit.

Perfect for: Western New York families who want a BIG fall day.

24. Springside Farm — Fabius

Springside Farm is a great option if your kids want activities rather than simply wandering through a pumpkin patch.

Its fall harvest season has featured an annual corn maze, pumpkins and family activities—with apple fritters, cider donuts and other fall foods completing the experience.

25. The Pumpkin Hollow — Syracuse

Our Farm is another smaller Central New York fall stop worth knowing about.

Ellms Family Farm is a Capital Region option for families who want the activities to be the main event.

29. Applewood Orchards — Rensselaer Falls

Heading farther north?

Ithaca might be one of the easiest places in New York to turn into your own fall adventure.

Add nearby Taughannock Falls State Park, explore a gorge, walk around town and give yourself permission not to rush.

31. Skaneateles

For a slower fall day, head to Skaneateles.

Walk through the village, look out over the lake, browse the little shops and find somewhere cozy for lunch.

Then take the scenic way home.

Sometimes that's enough.

32. Saratoga Springs

Saratoga isn't only about horse racing.

Fall is a wonderful time to explore the city and nearby Saratoga Spa State Park when the trees begin changing.

Walk, explore, grab lunch downtown and enjoy a destination that gives you both nature and a lively small-city atmosphere.

Perfect for: Families who like nature and town exploring.

33. Cooperstown

Baseball may put Cooperstown on the map, but autumn makes it worth considering even if baseball isn't the purpose of your trip.

The surrounding hills, Otsego Lake and historic village atmosphere make this a beautiful area for a fall drive.

34. Old Forge

Old Forge gives families that unmistakable Adirondack feeling without requiring a major hiking expedition.

The Adirondack region also offers seasonal train experiences, including pumpkin-themed rides in October in some years, so it's worth checking what's running when you plan your trip.

35. Take a Fall Road Trip Through the Adirondacks

And finally, don't underestimate the simplest Upstate New York fall activity of all:

Get in the car and drive.

You don't necessarily need tickets, reservations or an itinerary.

Choose a route through the Adirondacks, pack snacks and warm drinks, make a fall playlist and stop when you see something interesting.

One beautiful route begins around Lake Placid and can continue north and west through Adirondack and Thousand Islands country. New York's official tourism site even recommends Lake Placid-to-Alexandria Bay as a scenic fall road-trip route.

Pull over at scenic overlooks. Find a little farm stand. Let the kids pick a place for lunch. Take pictures.

Those unplanned stops sometimes become the things everyone remembers.

You don't need to visit all 35 places.

You don't even need to visit five.

Pick one or two places you've never been, add a few simple traditions closer to home and make this the fall that you actually get outside and enjoy where you live.

Go apple picking.

Walk through crunchy leaves.

Find a waterfall.

Drink cider.

Choose pumpkins.

Take the long way home just because the leaves are beautiful.

Our children don't need every season packed with elaborate plans.
